When the salmon are running thick on Michigan's Manistee River, there's nothing quite like getting out there with a guide who knows every bend, pool, and holding spot. Captain Josh has been working these waters for years, and his top-rated half-day trips give you the best shot at hooking into some serious coho salmon without burning your whole weekend. You'll drift quietly in a spacious 15-foot Hyde boat—just you, one buddy, and Josh—while he puts you on fish using whatever method is working that day. Whether that's swinging flies through deep runs or bouncing spawn bags along the bottom, this customer favorite trip adapts to what the salmon want and what you're comfortable throwing.
This isn't some cattle-boat operation where you're elbow-to-elbow with strangers. Josh keeps it intimate with just two anglers per trip, which means plenty of room to cast, fight fish, and actually learn something. The Hyde drift boat is perfect for Michigan's rivers—stable enough for comfort but nimble enough to slip into those tight spots where salmon like to stack up. You'll launch early morning or late afternoon when the fish are most active, drifting downstream while Josh reads the water and positions you for the best presentations. He's got all the gear covered—rods, reels, terminal tackle, bait, the works—so you just need to show up with your Michigan license and weather-appropriate clothes. The Manistee has some gorgeous stretches, especially during fall when the maples are turning and the salmon are pushing up from Lake Michigan in serious numbers.
Josh runs a versatile program that matches techniques to conditions and your skill level. If you're a fly angler, he'll have you swinging streamers through the deeper pools or dead-drifting egg patterns along the bottom structure where salmon hold. Conventional tackle guys will work with spinning gear, bouncing spawn bags, plugs, or spoons depending on water clarity and fish behavior. The key on the Manistee is reading the current seams and knowing which depths to target—something Josh has dialed in after countless trips. He's not just putting you over fish; he's explaining why they're there, how the water moves, and what makes a good drift versus a wasted cast. Whether you're new to salmon fishing or just new to this particular river system, you'll pick up techniques that'll help you on future trips.

"We had a nice trip even though we didn't catch anything our guide was very nice, kind and knowledgeable. If we had a question he answered and taught us a few things we didn't know for next time on our fishing trip. We will be sure to plan a steel head fishing trip for march he was telling us about. Thanks for a great time." - Sassafras
Coho salmon are absolute rockets when they grab your line, and the Manistee River sees excellent runs from August through December. These silver bullets typically range from 3 to 8 pounds, with occasional fish pushing into double digits during peak season. What makes coho so exciting is their fighting style—they'll make blistering runs, jump repeatedly, and test every knot in your setup. Unlike their chinook cousins, coho stay relatively fresh-looking even after weeks in the river, maintaining that bright silver color that makes for great photos. They're also more willing to chase lures and flies, which gives you more presentation options than targeting the moodier king salmon. Peak times are typically early morning and evening when water temperatures are coolest, though overcast days can keep them active longer. The best part about targeting coho on the Manistee is the sheer numbers—when conditions align, you might hook into multiple fish in a single pool.
Josh's calendar fills up fast during prime salmon season, especially those sweet-spot dates in September and October when the fish are thick and the weather's still comfortable. With morning and evening slots available through December 31st, you've got flexibility to work around your schedule. The three-day cancellation policy gives you peace of mind if Michigan weather doesn't cooperate, and at just two anglers per trip, you're getting personalized attention that bigger outfitters simply can't match. Whether you're looking to introduce someone new to salmon fishing or you want to learn this renowned river system with a guide who truly knows it, this world-class fishery delivers the goods. Don't wait until the last minute—the best trip dates book weeks in advance, and you don't want to miss out on what could be the salmon run of a lifetime.

The Coho salmon, or "silver," is what most folks dream about when they picture perfect salmon fishing. These chrome-bright beauties run 12-30 inches and pack serious fight into their 8-12 pound frames. What sets them apart? Pure acrobatics - they'll leap clean out of the water and can jump vertically up to 6 feet when hooked. Here on the Manistee, we target them from late August through fall as they push upstream from Lake Michigan. They love deeper pools and slack water near cover, especially around fallen timber and undercut banks. The meat is outstanding - bright orange and rich. My go-to tip: when you see one roll, wait a few beats before casting. They're checking out the area and will often take a well-placed presentation on the second drift through.
