Picture yourself drifting quietly down one of Michigan's most beautiful rivers, rod in hand, waiting for that electric moment when a powerful salmon hits your line. That's exactly what you'll get on this half-day guided salmon trip with Captain Josh aboard our spacious 15-foot Hyde drift boat. The Manistee River offers some of the state's best salmon fishing, and this private experience keeps things intimate with just two anglers max. No crowds, no rushing—just you, the river, and some seriously aggressive fish that'll test your skills and get your heart pumping.
Captain Josh knows the Manistee like the back of his hand, and he'll put you on fish whether you're swinging flies or throwing conventional tackle. The beauty of this trip is how it adapts to you—Josh reads the conditions and tailors everything to what's working that day. Some mornings call for early dawn starts when the water's glassy and salmon are feeding aggressively. Other times, evening sessions produce the hottest action as temps cool and fish get active again. The Hyde drift boat is perfect for this kind of fishing—stable enough for casting but quiet enough that we won't spook wary salmon holding in deeper pools. You'll cover prime water without the noise and commotion of a motor, letting the current do the work while you focus on fishing. All your gear is provided, from rods and reels to the right lures and bait for current conditions. Just grab your Michigan fishing license, dress for the weather, and bring a cooler if you want to take fish home.
The Manistee offers incredible versatility for salmon fishing, and Josh switches tactics based on what's producing. Fly fishing purists will love working streamers and egg patterns through deeper runs where salmon stage before spawning. The drift boat lets us hit those perfect presentation angles that are impossible from shore. For conventional tackle, we'll use everything from bottom bouncing rigs with spawn bags to casting spoons and plugs that trigger aggressive strikes from territorial fish. Josh sets up all the gear and shows you the techniques, but don't worry if you're new to river fishing—he breaks everything down so it makes sense. The boat positioning is key here. We'll anchor up in prime spots or make controlled drifts through productive water, always keeping lines in the strike zone. Josh watches the electronics and reads the water, positioning you where salmon are holding or moving through. Weather plays a huge role, and experienced guides like Josh know when recent rains have fish moving or when dropping temperatures fire up the bite.

"We had a nice trip even though we didn't catch anything our guide was very nice, kind and knowledgeable. If we had a question he answered and taught us a few things we didn't know for next time on our fishing trip. We will be sure to plan a steel head fishing trip for march he was telling us about. Thanks for a great time." - Sassafras
Coho salmon are the star of the show on the Manistee, and these silver bullets are absolutely incredible to catch on light tackle. These fish typically run 5-12 pounds, but don't let the size fool you—cohos are pure dynamite once hooked. They're famous for their aerial acrobatics, often jumping multiple times and making screaming runs that'll test your drag and your nerves. The Manistee's coho run peaks from late August through October, coinciding with their spawning migration from Lake Michigan. What makes cohos so special is their aggressive nature and willingness to hit a variety of presentations. Fresh chrome cohos straight from the big lake are particularly explosive, still carrying that ocean-bright silver coloration and maximum energy. As they spend more time in the river, they develop darker spawning colors but remain excellent fighters. These fish respond well to both flies and hardware, making them perfect for anglers who want to try different techniques. Josh knows exactly where cohos stage in different water levels and conditions, positioning you in pools and runs where these salmon concentrate before moving upstream.
The Manistee River salmon season runs from August 15th through December 31st, giving you plenty of opportunities to get out there and experience some of Michigan's finest river fishing. Morning trips often produce aggressive feeding activity, while evening sessions can be magic as salmon get active in cooler temperatures. With only two spots available per trip, these dates fill up fast during peak season. The flexible cancellation policy gives you peace of mind—just cancel three days ahead for a full refund if weather doesn't cooperate. This is hands-down one of the best ways to experience Michigan salmon fishing, combining expert guidance with prime water and top-notch equipment. Whether you're looking to learn new techniques, introduce someone to salmon fishing, or just enjoy a day on one of the state's most scenic rivers, Captain Josh will make sure you have an amazing time on the water.

These silver rockets put up one of the best fights you'll find in the Manistee. Coho typically run 12-30 inches and 8-12 pounds, with that classic silver body and dark spotted back. What makes them special is their acrobatic nature - they'll jump clean out of the water and make runs that'll test your drag. We target them in the deeper pools and slower runs, especially around fallen timber and undercut banks. The best action happens during their fall migration from August through November when they're pushing upstream to spawn. Their bright orange meat makes for excellent table fare too. Here's a local tip: when you hook one, keep steady pressure but don't horse them - let them tire themselves out with those jumps and you'll land more fish.
